The only film that grabbed my attention and held me there with an open mouth, was the amazing Lord of the Rings trilogy.

They said that whoever took that 3-book fantasy on, had to be crazy. Peter Jackson wasn’t crazy, but he was a hobbit in his heart.

His vision and attention to detail just made this magical film pop.
It was after watching the first film, Fellowship of the Ring, that the story of Becky and her magical adventure took place in my mind, heart and soul.
By the time the 1hr journey from the cinema had ended I had the names, plot, conflicts, storyline, everything written in my head. and then as most writers know, once you’re in the “zone” there is no stopping you.  By the time the second film, Two Towers, book two, The Quest was again plotted in my mind and it didn’t take long to get the first draft on paper.

REVIEW

“The Quest by Karina Kantas is the sequel to her book Illusional Reality. Becky is once again pulled from England back to the world of Tsinia where she is The Princess. Thya is Becky’s name in this astonishing fantasy world. Thya is the only one who can save her people and their land. They have been forced to leave their magical land and live in caves to survive. The world along with the characters are fleshed out even more with the addition of more monsters and characters and magic. You travel with Thya and a couple others through trials and tribulations which are expertly created to make their Quest either successful or a failure. Her magic becomes even stronger but alas there is a dark side to it that she has trouble controlling. This is a definite page turner. You will become completely invested in Thya and her companions surviving and making it back to Tsinia. The action is nonstop as Thya and her companions run into many intriguing problems. I loved both books. If you like fantasy worlds that take you away these are just the books you need.”

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

 City of Helkon
The door to the cell unlocked and Thya stood up. King Theon slowly entered. Almost cautiously. With his hands on his hips, he tilted his head and his eyebrows creased. The king pointed to her and then to a bowl that his servant held out. Thya peered into it and saw the same glittery substance that she had used in the throne room. It seemed stupid to refuse him. She did as she was told and, once the spell touched her lips, Theon’s words became clear.
“Rotate,” he commanded.
She turned around as instructed. A Rant pushed her hair aside, exposing her bare back and neck.
“Tis so then,” Theon exclaimed.
Thya turned around to face him. “What is so?”
He bent his head to the side, and his eyes widened. “You are not aware?” He stepped back. “Yet you possess the ancient emblem.”
“What ancient emblem? Will you not reveal the significance?” She would not beg even though she needed answers.
Theon’s sudden change of behaviour concerned her. His stance and facial expressions went from awe to surprise, then almost to fear. His head tilted again, and his hand rested on his chin as he walked around her.
“Do you not comprehend your greatness? Do you not realize who you are?”
“Of course, I am Queen Thya of Tsinia, Guardian of the Changlins.”
“Have you not marvelled at the difference with yourself and that of other Ganties? Surely you have experienced strength and a will that cannot be bested?”
“With certainty.”
“You possess the emblem.”
“What emblem?”
“Upon your back.”
“Tis naught but a birthmark.”
“Nay, Queen. You are mistaken. The mark as you name it, is an emblem of exceptional greatness. I understand now why your thoughts were blocked from me. Immortality appears with a value. I wonder what you would bestow for the quest of eternal youth?”
Nothing he said made sense to her but, before she could demand answers, the King jumped up and down and rubbed his hands like an excited young boy. “I will present you to the Bustak, as homage,” he said, rubbing his hands together as a huge smile etched on his face.
His next words were foreign to her. The magic of the spell had worn off, so she just stood and watched the Rant and the king communicate, hoping to get an idea of what was going to happen next.
Theon grinned and patted the guard’s back. They spoke briefly and nodded their heads as they continued to stare at her. She wished she understood. Who or what was the Bustak? The name raised goose pimples on her arms, and the belief that this was, again, the end of the road for her returned.
The guard led her from the cell and back into the palace. There were no shackles, no Rant gripping her arms. They walked beside her but kept glancing at her. She ignored them and concentrated on calling out with her mind. Alkazar, my love, where are you? She repeated it over and over, with no knowledge of whether he could hear her but, if he had, there was no answer.

The Quest is coming.

The second book to the exciting duology, Illusional Reality, will be hitting bookshelves on New Years Day –  01/01/2019.

Fans have been waiting for The Quest ever since book one. Illusional Reality was published back in 2016.

Reader’s Favorite Review

Karina Kantas’ young adult epic fantasy, Illusional Reality, is an intriguing and thought-provoking coming of age novel about a young woman whose life straddles two existences: that of her everyday life on earth and her regal existence as a Tsinian Ganty.

Once she’s in that alternate world, she’s faced with an arranged marriage to the evil and sadistic son of Darthorn, the despotic ruler of the neighboring Senx. Becky is resolved not to go along with that plan. While being a princess is something she doesn’t mind dreaming about, the reality can be much less appealing.

This epic fantasy is intricately plotted and will please fantasy readers who enjoy visiting alternate realities and exploring their cultures, justice systems, magic and religions. Illusional Reality is recommended for epic fantasy readers.

This is what we authors crave for!

Review by Paul White.

The Fish Tank & Other Stories

Marie Elena Alonso-Sierra

Two things.

One, I am a hard person to please when it comes to reading.

You see, I don’t much care for populist stories, they are all a bit same-old, same-old. They pander to the lowest common denominator in a sad and futile race for numbers.

I look for stories written from an interesting perspective, ones which touch the soul, stimulate the mind and provoke thought. Elements so often overlooked in favour of the mindless banality which tends to pass for entertainment.

Secondly, I rarely write reviews.

I think I have put pen to paper this way four times in as many years.

Therefore, it is not without reason I write this article, call it a review if you wish, about a book called The Fish Tank & other stories, written by Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra.

I first came across this book whilst editing ‘The List’, an annual recommended reading list published by CQ International. The cover, designed by Scott Carpenter grabbed my attention, exactly as a good cover should.

A little later, I was asked by an author friend if I would read an ARC. I did, hence this rambling account.

I was intrigued by the first tale, Jerrys gift, which sort of sets the feeling for the entire book. I say ‘sort of’ because the ambience of each unfolding story moodily fluctuates while continuing the ambience of haunting hope interwoven with a lingering sadness of passing.

The title tale, the Fish Tank, brings to life the stark reality of the authors experience as a child leaving Castro’s Cuba for a life in exile.

After reading The Fish Tank, I understand Maria’s statement about writing these short stories, “I never suspected creating the short stories would tear at the scab protecting a deep wound I still harbour in my heart, one that will not quite properly heal.”

Each story is narrated beautifully; the well-paced revealing of the characters and their situations makes each tale a joy to read, easily flowing from start to the end.

Reading this book allowed me to glimpse into people’s personal and private lives, to live with them as they feared for what the next day, the next hour may bring and, I felt the subdued passion of hope, as the teasing dreams of a better future dangle tantalisingly a fingertip away.

As I said at the beginning, I am a hard person to please when it comes to reading, which is why I rarely write reviews.

Enough said.

EPIC FANTASY SAGA CONTINUES….

WoE-BookTeaser1-700x457

The Matter of Manred Continues…

With the day of her arranged wedding fast approaching, will the Lady Eithne agree to marry King Eowain? What sinister forces have gathered to oppose the happy day? And what interest do the mysterious drymyn-priests and their dark, forgetful Gods have in such a mundane matter as love?
Since the day she was born, the Lady Eithne of Dolgallu has lived under a magical prohibition: she may not marry before the omens are deemed favorable.
Now, after a harrowing journey to the most sacred place in the Five Kingdoms, the mysterious priests and priestesses of the powerful Drymyn Order have pronounced the omens favorable, and her wedding to King Eowain of Droma has been arranged.
But Eithne has the right to accept—or reject—her suitor.
She did not set this geas upon herself, didn’t ask for the special attention of the Gods to her love-life. Yet the time for her decision has come.
Eowain has proven himself loyal, brave, kind—all the things any woman might ask from a man.
But there’s the way of it: “This is the man, you must marry him.” Is she not a free woman? Was she not guaranteed the right of choice?
Eithne is frustrated by the expectation that she will simply acquiesce to her fate, that she must accept that the Gods wove some secret pattern for her life and she can do nothing to stop it.
So how can she prove she has the freedom to choose if she doesn’t choose, “No”? How can she know for herself that her will is truly her own if she consents?

Here’s a closer look at The Wedding of Eithne

The plates of the cauldron had been hammered from within to push out the wyrd metal surface. From the facets of the boiling pot, mystic coelbreni runes and curvilinear pictographs stood out in the glow from the statue at the other end of the chamber.

The ancient image of Kârn, god of the forest, was on that cauldron. He wore roebuck antlers with the motif of a tree between them and sat with goat-legs crossed beneath him. In his right hand, he held a torc, and with his left gripped a horned serpent behind the head. To the left was a stag with antlers similar to those of the god. Dogs, cats, and cattle surrounded the scene. Some faced the god, others faced away. The antlers of the god reminded Eithne of the massive rack that hung over Eowain’s hearth in Dúnsciath. That seems so long ago and far away now. How strong and fierce and handsome he looked. And now… Tears welled into Eithne’s eyes, no matter the guards, the people. Helplessness and defeat overwhelmed her.

The brutes raised Eowain’s linen-wrapped body high in the air. The cauldron bubbled with herbs and mystic roots. On another of its plates was the bust of a torc-wearing woman, flanked by two six-spoked wheels and what seemed to be two elephants and two fierce, winged gryffins. Beneath the woman’s bust was the image of a terrible lion. The ancient chants of Corchen and the priestesses rose in a feverish spiral through the grotto.

Eithne shrieked a little as his linen-wrapped body sizzled into the scalding water. She had not thought it possible, for those short men to reduce his whole, bearish, war-like body, his whole life, into that cauldron. It seemed not nearly so vast as to contain the man she’d come to love.

It’s just an illusion

12440514_10205347228112101_1532605863647979167_o(1)

Illusional Reality is a New-adult romantic fantasy.

Now my fans are wondering why I’ve written a romantic fantasy. It’s no secret that I write in most genres, but I’m known for my hard-hitting Outlaw MC thrillers.

The film Lord of the Rings inspired me to write Illusional Reality. In fact, I came out of the cinema and by the time I arrived home (40 minutes) later, book one was completed in my head, the synopsis on paper, and explain with OTT excitement to my husband.
It didn’t take long to write the novel but many things changed before I was happy with the final draft. You see, once you start writing a book, and you’re in the “Zone” the characters take over and tell you were they want to go. And if you need to sleep, you have to do what they say. Many authors will agree with me on that.
At the time I wrote Illusional Reality there were no ebooks, so I submitted the manuscript to agents and publishers hoping for the big break and I knew it was the right time to get my book out. Fantasy films were hitting the big screen and people were either Potter mad or buying their own copies of L.O.T.R trilogy. But it was rejected. Then life got in the way and I put the book/s in a folder and then in the office cabinet and it stayed there for TEN years.
I promised my readers a new book (maybe my last) and I had three projects on the go, but no interest to continue writing them at that. time. So Illusional Reality was dusted off and here we are

You will not find any elves, dwarfs, witches or fairies in this tale. There are no goblins, unicorns and pots of gold at the end of a sparkly rainbow.
The underlying theme is love, sacrifice and forgiveness. You may meet a Portie or a telent. And if you’re lucky maybe a Zenith will transcribe an oracle. There are no Fantasy stereotypes in my book. The names, places, spells, they are all original and the plot fresh. Whether you like fantasy or not, you will love these characters. You will cry and laugh and then want to hunt me down when you get to the end of the book.
