A Rant & A Cry

If you’re a regular listener to my live radio show, Author Assist on the Artist First Radio network, you know how the show works. Okay, sometimes I throw in a few surprises for my guest like making them sing, live on air and getting them to take part in a quiz, they knew nothing about.

Well, on the last show, Friday 8th April, I did two things I’ve never done before in the five years I’ve been on the air. I had a rant, and I cried. I’m not going to tell you what the rant was about or why I cried, you need to listen to the show and find out.
As well as those two monumental occurrences, we have awesome music from Lola Black and her hit single Hot Enough. Live readings from two of my flash fictions from my Collection, Heads & Tales, and my wonderful guest, Teri M Brown, who also does a reading for you.

So plenty of entertainment. You can listen to the archived show here.

Writing Muzak

You all know that I dabble in lots of different fiction genres, one would think every genre would come with a different genre of music. Well, you couldn’t be more wrong!

No matter, if I was writing my YA fantasy duology, Illusional Reality, or one of the OUTLAW dark romances series, or even some poetry ( rarely ) I would always have music on in the background, or coming through headphones, as it helps me get lost in the world I’ve created.

And the genre of music? Those that know me well. \m/

I’ve never done a playlist in my books. I probably never will. I doubt my readers would care what I listen to when I write. But here’s a few, so you get the idea. Each song tells its own story, Epic shit!

This last one is very special to me. It’s the song that I used to sing when I sang lead in a rock band… back in the day. Yep, I could hit those F-ing notes!

Time For A Musical Break

I had the opportunity to chat with young and upcoming rap and hip hop artist 7o BENZO (pronounced seven o benzo)

His latest album Hood Quote which was released in February this year has a mixture of styles from freestyling to collaborations with other rappers. However, what makes 7oBenzo and this album more amazing is that he produced, mixed and made this album by himself whilst in lockdown. Using his small make shift studio in his living room and beat pad for his instrumental sounds, this whole album was created in lockdown and produced by just one person.

You can listen to the tracks on the album here.
Some of the songs are raw with emotion and energy, others are a little bit more laid back, however, all the tracks use explicit language and many of the lyrics refer to violence. So that’s the only warning I’m going to give.
I found 7oBenzo to be polite, and just talking to him displayed how much passion he has for rap and making music and being able to pull off making an album in his living room, just goes to show how talented he is.
Please watch this interview and get to know the man Behind The Pen.

A Song For The Times

Just like an author writes a book and tells a story, so does a song.

AKoustic Soul titled ‘Finite Eternity’

This is what Amit has to say about the song.

Mental health is a very important aspect of our lives that gets ignored at times and Finite Eternity, though an abstract concept, gets very real with the feelings & emotions many of us, including I, have been through, especially in the early period of the lockdown.

The simple message that I hope to spread through this song is to look out for ourselves and those around us always & support each other.

Cannon Beach are taking you to the UpsideDown

Those who watch Stranger Things may recognise the title. The Upside Down is the debut track by Cannon Beach.

This is such a catchy tune. That’s officially released 30th October. This UK based band will be featuring in the break of November’s Author Assist Radio Show, on the Artist First Radio Network. At 1.30pm EST

Combining classic emo themes with a distinctive 80’s synth beat, Cannon Beach have concocted a signature sound in an unexpected way. Coming from the creative minds of producer Daniel Jeffery (Inherit The Stars), and singer Beth Connelly (Crimson Tide), Cannon Beach is an exploration into new territory for the pair, who have worked together in the past on previous projects, but never as a joint venture such as this.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/cannonbofficial

Eager to create a more upbeat sound during these tumultuous times, Cannon Beach was approached almost as an homage to pop culture, reviving the futuristic sounds of the 80s and bringing them into the 21st century. When asked how they would describe Cannon Beach, Beth and Daniel said to “Well, we’re heavily inspired by popular movies, tv shows, video games…even our name ‘Cannon Beach’ is a reference to where they shot a scene from Goonies. We want to capture and recreate the same fun you experienced but as music. It’s new, yet totally nostalgic at the same time.” True to form for both Connelly and Jeffery, Cannon Beach is very much about coping with the hard times by surrounding yourself with things you love, in this case the very best that pop culture has to offer, and being reminded that you are not alone.
Expect more single releases from the South Yorkshire outfit within the coming months.

Believe me, if this track is anything to go by, their album is going to be blinding. Keep your ears and eyes open for more from this band.

THE POWER OF LOVE – A Fairytale Story

A charming fairy tale by multi-genre author Karen J Mossman.

A mother’s love is the strongest bond of all. She will do anything for her child. For Jorge that bond is shown to him by way of music.

Josie, like everyone else in the Kingdom, hears the music but only Jorge can see it.

The calling finally lures him to the King’s castle and what he finds will change his life forever.

A short story suitable for all ages.

One day, several years later, Jorge was out hunting with Josie. The King’s music filled the air, and Jorge stopped and lowered his bow. Its mournful song tore into his soul with its beauty.
The musical notes had become transparent, accompanied by a myriad of rainbow colours. Every time he saw them, their beauty grew.
Josie watched him gazing into the air for a moment and then said, “You’re seeing them, aren’t you?”
Jorge nodded. He could never be untruthful to the girl he would eventually marry. “Soon I shall join the others and visit the castle to watch the King play.”
“But your parents forbade you,” she reminded him.
“I don’t want to hurt them, but the music calls me, Josie. I have no choice. One day soon, I must go.”
“Then I will accompany you. You should tell your parents what you intend to do.”
Jorge agreed, and, when they returned home, he said goodbye to Josie and decided now was the time to tell his parents.

Black Shroud

No matter what you see on the outside, the picket fence and bright flowers.
You have no idea what it’s like on the inside, awake on every passing hour.

Darkness creeps even closer. The light is being shut out.
I would hide inside myself but it’s an even darker place full of voices and self-doubts.

There’s no feeling of losing control, as I lost that luxury some time ago.
I’m too tired to cry, too tried to crawl and so I sit in my cradled ball and watch the shadows fall.

You see the smiles, the paintings of laughter.
I see a bottomless pit while my world spins faster.

I wish I could run far away
and that everyone would just fade away.

I can’t leave, wish I could. I can’t run from my fears.
You won’t hear my silent screams and you’re blind to my invisible tears.

If only you could step into my shoes, for just one day.
Feel the knives that claw and see my darkness that washes light away.

Even then you couldn’t – wouldn’t understand.
When you take off my shoes, your mood will vanish and life goes back to being grand.

Chester Bennington, the front man for Linkin Park, business guru, husband and father of six, took his own life on June 20th, 2017.

Many are asking, what would make a person who has that life, fame, fortune, love and talent like that take his own life. His suicide has rocked not just the music world but fans globally are mourning the loss of this amazing, soft-spoken warm-hearted man.

Chester was just one of millions of people of all ages, sex and creed that suffer from depression.

Sadly creative people, writers, musicians, actors, singers, artists are more prone to suffer from depression. If you know anyone, and author, a singer, ask if they get depressed? Ask if they suffer from depression. You will be shocked by the results.

I have suffered from depression since I was a teen. I have been on antidepressants seen therapists and yes, even felt suicidal.

I understand how he felt inside and why he did what he did. It wouldn’t have mattered if he had family and friends watching him and showering him love. It was never about outside forces.
It was the demons in his head telling him he was worthless, that no one cared and how much better off his family would be without him. When your mind tells you this, you believe it. You believe the lies and your whole emotional state changes because of what your mind is telling you.

And if you are one of the lucky ones and you step out of that darkness. You wonder why how you could ever feel that way. And then you go back to life’s routine until it hits again, and again and again. But know this – from wanting to end your life and then actually doing it, can take but minutes seconds and then it’s over!

Depression is caused by a unbalancing of chemicals in the brain. Trigger that with the past and present traumas or stress and you have a time bomb.  Chester was always open about his battle with depression. He screamed his anger in his songs and his darkness and how he felt on the inside came out in the words. And we the fans loved him for it. Because we understood, we resonated with his lyrics. Being alone, being bullied, feeling like you were invisible, and mental and physical abuse. He was never ashamed and spoke openly about his depression and wanting to end it all.

I truly feel his music has helped and probably saved lives because they knew they were no longer alone.

Sadly, nothing could have prevented the inevitable. the suffocation and despair were too much for Chester, and for many others.

I am having a bad time of late and you would think that anyone who was taking three lots of antidepressant would be on a high, rather than a low, but I’m not.  I have a chronic illness and I need a cocktail of drugs just to get my arse out of bed and plant that smile on my face. I’m struggling to get through every day while the voices in my head keep knocking me back down.  I tear up at everything that makes me feel emotion.

A person only has so much strength and right now I’m feeling really weak.

Are you ready for July’s show? It’s gonna be a big one. I’ll be focussing on Going Indie. What that means to authors and how do readers feel about an indie author.
