The Poet Jonathan Koven

Actually, Jonathan isn’t just a poet he’s a storyteller and a bloody good one as he just came second place in the prestigious Electric Eclectic Novella Contest and will be having his winning story, ‘Below Torrential Hill,’ published as a pocketbook this winter and will be part of the Electric Eclectic branding.

Back to Jonathan.

He’s a poet, an author and also an editor.

Jonathan Koven grew up on Long Island, NY, embraced by tree-speak, tide’s rush, and the love and support of his family. He holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from American University, works as a technical writer, and is Toho Journal’s head fiction editor and workshop coordinator. He lives in Philadelphia with his best friend and future wife Delana, and cats Peanut Butter and Keebler.

Take a look at his debut book.

Review Quotes

Palm Lines invites one into a sensuous natural world . . . [Koven] is a writer of tremendous skill.”—Tracey Levine, author of You Are What You Are and Asst. Professor of English at Arcadia University.

“These are ecstatic poems which wrestle with surrender. Even as they reach outward, they are reflecting back, mapping the story of our own hands.”—David Keplinger, author of Another City, winner of 2019 UNT Rilke Prize.

“In Palm Lines, everything is humongous because of the gravity of the beauty and emotion observed—and language is the catharsis . . . This accessible collection offers the reader an opportunity to take a deep breath and reflect.”
—Sean Lynch, editor of Serotonin

Art

Now I must mention this amazing book cover above, which was illustrated by Tyler Lentini. It almost like a representation of a moving painting. And there is more of Tyler’s art work throughout the book.

Take a look at another illustration from this artist.

Just visualising this image, I can see a bird, a naked woman and a tree, but then I can see a cave with water rushing down into a waterfall and a forest. Art has so many concepts and it’s up to the eye of the beholder to take what they can from the image.

What do you take from this amazing painting?

Time For A Musical Break

Meet Violets Leap

Violets Leap are a 4piece alternative rock band from north wales, UK.

Formed in early 2018 with a shared desire to make music that illustrates a range of influences but with its own recognisable sound. By summer 2018, the band had pulled together a short set of original material and began gigging around the local area.

Violets Leap combine elements of punk, metal, grunge, metal core, emo and more into their own brand of alternative rock. High energy and sweeping melodies are a strong feature on all tracks.

By autumn 2018, the sound and songs had matured enough to release their first EP, Ghost of Violet.

Early 2019 saw a return to the studio to release their second EP, ‘Broken Futures’. Four more edgy songs with intriguing stories and catchy melodies which were accompanied by a run of performances at clubs and festivals.

Late 2019 saw a return to the studio and the release of a third ‘Source of Addiction’, soon to be available on digital platforms.

What can I say about this track. Just wait until those drums and electric guitar come in. Awesome!

When I was chatting with the guys on FaceBook I asked them where they got their name from as it’s such an unusual name for a rock band. The story I got back deserved a mention.
There was a woman named Violet, a con woman who managed to con a man out of a fortune by telling him she was coming into a large inheritance and would pay him back. Well sex and money, so no more. Only on the day, she was due to get this inheritance her car was found in the sea. It looked like a suicide, but a body was never found. She would have gotten away with it but she was seen and recognized in Scotland where she was hiding. So the cliff drop was named Violets Leap.

Where to find and listen to Violets Leap.

In this day and age where bands can’t go out and do live gigs or are in lockdown and can’t get to the studios, it’s more important than ever to support independent bands. So have a listen to Violets Leap’s music. Send them a message, buy their EP’s and show your support.

Thya is interviewed by The Protagonist Speaks, blog.

Dear readers, tonight with us is a marketing exec turned heir to a magical kingdom. She’s here to tell us about power and destiny.

Tell us a little about where you grew up. What was it like there?

Well, I’m from the UK, at least I thought I was. Turned out I was adopted and was born in Tsinia a magical land on Enumac.  My adopted parents were amazing and gave me love and everything I needed.  Thanks to them, I went to college and studied hard and then got a position in a prestigious Marketing firm and worked my way up before becoming an executive.

I was happy in my own way. I lived by myself in a converted loft in the centre of town and was single and I thought my life path was set. But little did I know that everything I thought was real was just an illusion  and everything I knew as truth, was, in fact, a lie,

What do you do now?

Now I’m Queen of Tsinia, my real home. Guardians to the Changlins (the sacred stones.) When I found out who I was, it took a lot to finally accept my rightful destiny.  I was very stubborn, well I still am. But I refused to take the crown and demanded they send me back home. Especially when I found out what they had planned for me. Can you imagine, waking up in a  strange land, being told you are the heir and you have magical powers and that you’re to marry an evil warlord’s son, which it was said, he was the one who slew my parents, the rulers of Tsinia (the Ganties.)

I didn’t know these Tsinians and yet their govern committee decided that an alliance between the two lands, Senx and Tsinia would create peace and I was supposed to be the cement. So stubborn me refused their plans and to meet with Darthorn and my decision caused death and destruction. Knowing what I do, If I could have gone back, I would have done things a lot differently.
